God works in many unseen ways. As David was secretly anointed to become king, and as seeds sprout and root underground before popping up at the surface in Jesus parable, so God is continuing to work in each of us below the surface. For example God had been working on John Wesley for some time before his heart was “strangely warmed” at Aldersgate. It happened during a reading of Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. This is not heady reading, but it was just the spark God needed to bring to Wesley’s conscious mind the work God had been fomenting for some months. So it usually goes, our growth in grace seems to come in fits and starts, while God’s Spirit is working along all the time to prepare us.
Lord God, we know that You are always at work within us. But we often do not cooperate. Too many times we refuse to listen to Your Spirit as He speaks within us. We would rather do as we have always done, instead of letting You do a new work through us. We would rather go along with the crowd instead of standing up for what is right. Forgive us, and help us be open to life changes Your Spirit wants to work in us.
