The Fellowship of the Spirit

Passage: Acts 19:1-7, Mark 1:4-11
Service Type:

When Jesus was baptized, a voice spoke from heaven proclaiming Jesus to be the son of God, and God’s spirit was present like a dove descending from heaven.  Up to that point baptism, was seen as a cleansing ritual, purifying an individual in preparation for God’s coming.  Now it became a ritual of incorporation in the family of God.  Perhaps 20 years later Paul encounters people who are still baptizing for repentance only, and offers them inclusion by baptizing them in Jesus name.  The Holy Spirit responds with signs of welcome into the Christian family.

God of grace and wonder, we sometimes forget that we are part of a larger Christian family.  We forget that we have all been adopted into God’s family, and don’t treat one another as loving siblings do.  We forget that Your Spirit dwells in us, and behave in ways that don’t bring You honor and glory.  Forgive us, and renew our love for You and for one another.
