John the Baptist faithfully served God, and proclaimed the message God gave him to preach. But he offended powerful people, and ended up paying the price. The vehicle of his downfall was a sensual dance and a drunken promise. Uzzah though he was serving God by protecting the ark, instead he broke a commandment and died. When David finally resumed the processional David led it with dancing, which displeased his wife.
Holy God we recognize that our motives are not always pure. Like Uzzah we may think we are defending Your honor, while our actions bring dishonor to Your name. We often do things for our own glory, rather than Yours, like Salome. We may think boasts to our friends justify doing things against Your will like Herod. Forgive us, and help us always to put Your name above our own.
