Seeking God

Passage: Job 23:1-17, Mark 10:17-31
Service Type:

Job has suffered great loss, and is seeking God’s grace, but finding nothing.  He feels he has been faithful, but God is for some reason punishing him, and wants to know why.  His life is empty.  The man who approaches Jesus is likewise seeking.  He has obeyed the commandments, but feels like there must be something else he should do.  When Jesus tells him to sell his possessions, and come with Him, the man goes away sorrowful, because he is rich.  When Peter declares the disciples have given up everything, Jesus answers that God will restore what they have lost, with persecutions, and eternal  life.

When we seek God, we don’t always get the answer we want, but it will usually involve sacrifice.

God our creator, You give us the gifts of life.  But we often seek you as did Job, and the Rich man and Peter, seeking that You will validate our position with You.  But Your answer to us often calls us to acknowledge that we have not lived up to Your expectations.  You have called us to show love for others in self sacrificing ways, but we often hold back.  We are willing to go only so far in our obedience.  Forgive us, and remind us anew of Your sacrifice for us on the cross.
