John came with baptism as a symbol of Repentance. Jesus began his ministry preaching repentance. Peter tells his readers that judgment has been delayed to let as many as possible come to repentance. He then reminds them that a new heaven and earth are on the way, but to be part of them, we should live befittingly today. This means keeping up our relationship with God, which means staying humble and continuing to repent and come back to God. Repentance also leads to comfort, which was the other task of John.
