Preparing the Way

Passage: Isaiah 61:1-11, John 1:19-28
Service Type:

John the Baptist came to prepare the way of Christ, to announce a call to repentance, and bring comfort that the Christ was to be revealed shortly.  But people tend to revere prophets (or reject them entirely), and John took care always to point the way not to himself, but to the one who was coming:  the One who would bring healing to body and spirit, who would bring righteousness to God’s people.

God of grace and forgiveness, you call us to prepare the way for Your coming into the lives of those around us..  As with John this includes calling people to repent.  But we don’t like to do that, we don’t want to be “holier than thou.,  so we stay silent.   But we also forget to invite people to receive the healing of the Lord.  We forget to announce the coming of a righteous judge.  Forgive us, and teach us once more to witness to the fullness of the gospel.
