Love On Command
Jesus' one commandment is that we should love one another as He loves us. He tells his disciples the ultimate love is to be willing to die to help those we love. This is the all-consuming agape love that is offered by God. It is the love we are to show one another. In 1 John the apostle goes so far as to say if we don’t love others, we don’t love God. Our human nature puts strings on our love, God’s love has none. We are called to emulate God’s love for us as shown in Jesus.
Most Holy God, you have loved us with a perfect love, being willing to die so that we might see Your love in our lives. Then You challenge us to love others in the same way. That is an overwhelming request. We know that it is the journey of a lifetime, and we aren’t sure we really want to commit to that. We know that it isn’t in us to give that kind of love. We forget Your promise to recreate us so that we are able to love as You have loved us. Remind us that even when we fail, Your love remains with us forever.
