Jesus argues with the Sadducees who claim that besides not being mentioned in the Torah, resurrection has some logical impossibilities.  Jesus says they are wrong and know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.  In Thessalonians, Paul refutes claims that Christ has already returned.  He notes that this will not happen until evil has multiplied.  We face many false claims that should be checked against scripture.  But the chance to honor those who have died in the faith is still important

Those who have died in Christ remain alive and join us in prayer and praise.

Confession

Lord Jesus, we await Your return to earth with eager longing, because You will bring an end to the reign of evil.  Yet we are also susceptible to false claims about Your coming.  We let ourselves believe that someone (other than You) will save us from evil times.  We forget that those who have been faithful to You remain with You forever, and join us in our prayers and petitions to You.  We sometimes even doubt that eternal life is Your gift to us.  Forgive us, and enable us to share in faith with those who have crossed the river to You.
