A Matter of the Heart

Dec 19 2012

Verse of The day: Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in The Lord and he will give you The desires of your heart.” (NIV)

Well I pray you had a chance to feast at God’s table yesterday and you received some of His sweet desert and it brought a joy to your heart as described in Jeremiah 15:16 “When Your Words came, I ate Them; They were my joy and my hearts delight.” And guess what- for all you weight watchers and health nuts, you don’t have to worry about how much you eat or take in. As There are no calories, cholesterol, fatty substances, or man made chemicals added to it. Proverbs 13:25 “The righteous eat to their hearts’ content…” So, eat as long and as much as you want.

Wow! I have really enjoyed writing these devotions over the last few weeks concerning our hearts. And today what a more fitting way to wrap this up than by sharing a personal witness of God’s goodness and keeping His promises to Jo and me.

Today’s scripture is one of the blessings from God we all hope and dream that we will be able to receive from Him as we go through life. And as long as I can remember back, one of Jo’s and my desires and dreams since we have been married is to have a log cabin house somewhere in Colorado. And over the last several years we have looked at a lot of different properties. Praying that God would provide just the right place to possibly call home someday or at least some place to go and spend time in His beautiful creation we call The “Rocky Mountains”. We’ve come close several times to buying something, but continued to be patient waiting on The Lord to open or close The right doors. And, over The last 30 days God has opened those doors and this Friday we will be closing on an amazing log cabin home in The Lake City, Colorado area. And in a future devotion I will share more about this incredible gift from God and how He opened and closed The right doors to make all this possible.

Well, I hope you have been blessed as much as I have been blessed in writing these devotions concerning our hearts. And again why I think Rick Warren said it best when he said “The heart of The matter is a matter of The heart.” I truly believe the answer to solving all the problems in this world starts with the heart. And by changing one heart at a time, that is truly devoted to God, we can make a huge impact in this nation--that can and will change the current direction we are headed in.

While there may be a lot of different ways to sum these last few weeks concerning the heart, let me leave you with an acronym I put together entitled “God Loves You.” So, I pray you have found encouragement, strength, and a few new tools for equipping your heart and I pray God will give you the desires of your heart. And just remember your heart does come with a clear title, owner’s manual, and fire insurance when operated correctly. As allows HAVE A GREAT DAY IN The LORD AND SHARE IT WITH SOMEONE!

Verse of the day: Psalm 73:1 “Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.” (NIV)

I know it’s probably in their job description to ask, but why is it when you go out to eat and you ask for a to-go box because you’re too full to eat it all that your waiter will ask you “did you save room for desert?” Well over the last couple of weeks you might be feeling a little full of all this heart stuff we have been talking about, but it’s time for the desert. You know the good stuff that comes with a heart that is pure and seeking and following the Lord. And this is were today’s verse comes in “Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.”

So, what are some of the rewards and benefits we find in God’s word? One of the first things I believe that happens we find in Psalm 119:32 “I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.” God will set your heart free of the burdens you are carrying once you call on Him. Now don’t get me wrong it doesn’t mean that once we run to God everything will be made perfect and the storms of life will go away. But what it does mean is we will find a peace that goes beyond understanding even in the mist of storms. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV) And then we find in Proverbs 14:30 “A heart at peace gives life to the body…..” Let see-so far God has set our hearts free, given us peace and given us longer life. I don’t know about you but this desert stuff is pretty sweet so far. So what else can we expect from a pure heart?

Psalm 16 : 9 tells us“Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.” It seems you can always tell those who truly have the Lord in their heart. They just seem to carry a spirit of love, joy and peace that makes everyone around them feel better. Proverbs 15:13 “A happy heart makes the face cheerful,…” Proverbs 15:30 “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart,….” I don’t know about you, but for me a smiling face and loving heart always makes a bad day better. Then in Proverbs 17 : 22 we are told “A cheerful heart is good medicine…” Wow! Now we have joy in our hearts, rest and security, a smile on our face, a tongue that rejoices and the best medicine we could ever give our heart. What more could a person want? Glad you asked!

Then to top all this off, God gives us wisdom Psalm 90:12 “……gain a heart of wisdom”and some of the benefits of wisdom are Proverbs 10:8 “The wise in heart accept commands” Proverbs 16:23 A wise man’s heart guides his mouth” And if you are anything like me I need all the wisdom I can get when it comes to my mouth and tongue at times.

Well I don’t know how full your are today, but the good news is when you are feasting at God’s table, that is His word, you will never get too full and desert will always seem sweeter even in the mist of storms. Proverbs 15:15 “…the cheerful heart has a continual feast.”

So, l pray you will look at God’s desert menu today and find it sweeter than ever before and maybe as the old saying goes “eat desert first-life is short”. And if you have never tasted His sweet desert before, maybe it's time to ask Him to help you to purify your heart.
